Questions from friends re:scandal
The other day, my good friend asked me how I feel about being Catholic among the lastest sex abuse scandals. I told her I hadn't paid attention to it, ignorance is bliss, right? How do other people feel about this and how do you answer when someone asks you about it? It is a huge thorn in our Catholic side and it is quite embarassing.
With a history as long as the Catholic Church’s we are bound to have some scandals, mistakes and outright evildoers. However, the percentage of those folks compared to the people who are God-fearing, God loving, good hearted, good natured and even Blessed is very small. We are also an evolving society of men, 20 years ago the general thought on sexual abuse is quite different than our thoughts today. 20 years ago I think they may have done the wrong thing, but I also think that they did the best that they could at that time. We need not “throw out the baby with the bathwater”. Jesus knew that we were going to make mistakes, even warned Peter about denying him, we just have to learn from those mistakes. The US now has a very clear policy on abuse and a lot of checks and balances to guard against; maybe the entire Church should institute some of those same policies.
